In danger of getting rid of the conventional mail system all together?
As the deal that royal mail faces having 30% of the company being sold off and privatised looking set to go through, we have to wonder if the mail room services are needed anymore.
Is the written letter on its way out? The coming of email had a damaging impact of the letter, with the ability to send and recieve a email quickly, its low cost and reduced hassle in sending one out. Covering huge distances and spell checking for us, email has certainly benefiited us all. Lovers of the art of letter writing claim it can never be as personal or formal depening on its nature, but could we say email has now arrived at that point?
Theres still the need for some direct mail services. We’re still sent bills via through the post, but in afew years could we all be receiving our bills through the computer? We will even see a drop in smaller package deliveries now items such as cds and dvds can be downloaded and burned from the computer. Bigger items are now being picked up and sent back by going onto the computer.
Why do we still enjoy having a pyshical product and letters we can hold/ smell? Valentines, christmas and birthday cards feel alot more personal with the effort put into them,. Certain people just cannot get to grips with their computers will still use conventional mail systems because they need to. With some products we will still need our postal service for items to small for couriers, such as video games and online dvd rentals.
When we are in danger of privatisation of our public mail system, we have to ask what is to come for the conventional methods of mail.
